There are a few things that help you feel instantly better after a breakup. Working out is one of them. Even though working out will not magically get over a breakup, it will make you feel better and get you one step closer to getting closure.
Why going to the gym after a breakup is great for you
1. Happy Place
Most of the emotions that you experience during your grief are just the results of chemical reactions in your brain. Working out releases endorphins, which is the chemical associated with happiness. So basically when you are working out, you are injecting yourself with a chemical that makes you calm and happy.
When you think of gym, you think of a better body. And with a great body comes great confidence. I am not saying you can’t have great confidence without a great body. I am just saying that having a great body can only increase your chances. When you are working towards improving your body, you are working towards your future. When you are imagining yourself in the future with a great body, you are forcing yourself to think of a future which will be awesome. That’s exactly the kind of thinking that you need to stop obsessing over the past.
3. Eat Right
If you start going to the gym, chances are you are going to start watching what you eat as well. During the breakup, people have a tendency to indulge themselves in unhealthy foods which have a detrimental effect on their health in the long run. By going to the gym, you are giving yourself an extra incentive to watch what you eat. Even if you are feeling miserable from the breakup, at least you will not feel miserable about eating 20 burritos and a bucket of ice cream last night.
4. Sleep Tight
Insomnia can be one of the side effects of a heart-break. Gong to the gym will give your body the exercise it needs to get a good night sleep. Research has shown that exercise helps in relieving insomnia. It also helps you get a better quality sleep. If you are having trouble sleeping and are thinking of resorting to sleeping pills, you might just want to try working out before that.
5. Energy Boost
Exercise will also motivate you to get back in the dating game. Going to the gym regularly will improve your overall energy levels and will give you the extra incentive you need to start dating again. A few studies have shown that exercise also increases your sex drive. An increased sex drive will only motivate you to go out there and find a mate. And that will help you get over your ex (unless you decide to sleep with your ex, which is a very bad idea).
