Today TMZ and People Magazine announced that Paul McCartney asked is girlfriend of four years, Nancy Shevell, to marry him. Typically I’m bit of a romantic when it comes to marriage; I believe in the fairy tale, hearts and flowers of it all. But when I heard this today it actually made me a bit sad…for Paul. What is he thinking? Remember Heather and what a peach she turned out to be? My guess is Paul is desperately searching for the same level of intimacy and love he shared with Linda. When you look through The Beatles catalogue, it’s the perfect soundtrack to his current status. Paul, has become a Nowhere Man who longs for Yesterday. It’s not that Paul is some sad, desperate, man to be pitied. But if this was your uncle or father embarking on their third marriage, you may see it as a cry that was echoed in the song, Help. This story becomes more disheartening when you consider he is worth around $725 million and Heather Mills {wife #2} was awarded $48.6 million for her brief 4 year marriage to Paul. Just sad!
Paul has been fortunate enough to have found and enjoyed a successful marriage to his soul mate and no one he meets will be able to replace. I’m not saying Paul should live alone in solace; I’m all for intimacy, relationships, rainbows and butterflies but he can have all of these things without getting married…again. If Paul were my father or uncle I would recommend that he Let It Be, get by With a Little Help from my Friends, enjoy the company of a good woman {without marrying her} and live in Strawberry Fields Forever!
